On June 1, the New England Patriots Alumni Club (NEPAC) hosted its 4th annual Stars and Stripers Fishing Tournament. This event supports the NEPAC mission to fund youth and high school sports programs throughout New England.
The festivities began with breakfast at 6:30 a.m. followed by open water fishing for Stripers & Blues. The temperature was hot and boats were ready to begin yet another year of Captain rivalries, the race to catch the first fish of the day, the heaviest, and the most. All of the boats were generously donated and equipped with high quality fishing gear, bait, and lots of fishing lore!
For the fourth straight year, the tournament was held at the Green Pond Marina in East Falmouth. There were fifteen boats, each containing three fans and a former player. Former Patriots players that were on-hand included Pete Brock, Steve Grogan, Ronnie Lippett, Jon Williams, Patrick Pass among others and current Patriots, Marcus Cannon and Nate Solder.
Lines were out at 8 a.m. and in at 3 p.m. with a weigh in by 4:30 p.m. Tim Cruise of Canton MA aboard ‘Hey Jude’ captained by Peter Hurwitz took the prize for the biggest striper weighing in at 19.2 pounds. Marcus Cannon was the current player on board.
The following night, the winning team was treated to a special dinner at Skipjack’s, a seafood restaurant at Patriot Place and sponsor of the fishing tournament. The dinner featured the winning fish prepared three different ways by Skipjack’s premier chef. Players, the New England Patriots Cheerleaders, the boat captain, crew and anglers all attended the victory dinner, shared their fishing stories, and enjoyed the many delicious dishes so generously provided by Skipjack’s. Next year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014
